“When people access the water, when people access the ocean, it helps them form a new set of habits, a new set of memories, a new set of patterns in their brain. It helps them describe themselves with a new story.” – Dr. Wallace J. Nichols

The Resurface Trauma Recovery programme is structured on the essential resource building stages of both EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), the only two treatment modalities recommended by NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) for the treatment of PTSD.

The programmes consist of sessions that include:

SURFING – 2 hour Surf lessons each morning.

MINDFULNESS -Daily Interoception Classes.

TRE – Trauma release exercise sessions each evening.

GROUP THERAPY – Trauma focused Experiential Group therapy.

PSYCHO-EDUCATION  – Lecture/workshops on the nature and recovery from trauma.

ASSESSMENT and AFTER-CARE – assessment on intake, post-treatment planning and continuing care recommendations.

At Resurface we believe that treating trauma requires a holistic approach due to the complex nature of the traumatic condition. Trauma impacts a client’s cognitive skills, emotional regulation and somatic responses. As a result of this we need a variety of interventions and approaches to successfully deal with all of these problems. The Resurface programme is primarily based on three evidence based modalities recommended by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), World Health Organisation (WHO) and  the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) as safe and effective trauma treatment: EMDR, CBT and Mindfulness.

“Youness is a local who has been with Surf Maroc for five years. He was great fun but also intense and analytical, giving feedback after every wave I caught: “Hands further up the board!”; “Paddle harder!”; and, time and again “Don’t look down at the board!” A couple of guys who have surfed all over the world told me Youness was the best instructor they have ever had.”
